Typically Achilles tendinopathy refers to a combination of pain, swelling, and a decrease in performance of the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body and connects our calf muscle to our heel (calcaneus) therefore activities that involve running or jumping pose a greater risk to injury.
Symptoms:
Soreness along the tendon and/or at the back of the heel
Pain during activities that involve running or jumping
Significant pain after periods of inactivity
Risk Factors:
Running and jumping
Typically people age 35 and over are at higher risk of injury
Rapid changes in activity levels including frequency, duration, intensity, or terrain
Treatment Options:
Rest and modifying activity level
Heel lifts to wear inside footwear to alleviate strain at tendon
Custom foot orthotics to help address biomechanical/foot alignment problems
Replacement of inappropriate or old footwear
Exercises under the guidance of a therapist such as Physiotherapist
Athletic taping and/or compression garments/socks
Laser therapy
