What is Osteochondrosis or growth plate disorders?
Typically these are disorders that occur in a growing part of the skeleton where there is a circulation disturbance affecting the bone. These can be due to a number of problems, such as mechanical, anatomic or traumatic occurrences.
Symptoms:
- Freiberg’s Disease - pain and/or swelling at the 2nd or 3rd metatarsal head (ball of the foot)
- Kohler’s Disease - pain/tenderness/swelling at the top of the arch (navicular)
- Sever’s Disease - pain at the heel of the foot just below the Achilles tendon
- Osgood-Schlatter’s - pain at the knee cap
- Legg-Calve-Perthes - pain in the groin, medial thigh and involves a vague limp
Risk Factors:
- Growing children - although residual symptoms of pain and deformity can be noted during adulthood
