It has been reported that foot problems are the leading cause of hospitalizations in those living with Type 2 Diabetes. This disease can contribute to reduced circulation or sensation (neuropathy) that makes it difficult to notice if shoes are not fitting properly or something is irritating the feet. If left undetected or treated, this can lead to the development of wounds or ulcers that in extreme cases, can result in amputation.
Symptoms:
Loss of sensation in feet and lower legs
Delays in healing
Numbness or tingling
Development of calluses or corns
Heavy or spongy feeling in the feet
Dry, peeling or cracked skin
Risk Factors:
Family history of diabetes
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Smoking
Inconsistent or high blood sugar levels
Treatment Options:
Daily checks of the feet and toes: look for any redness, cuts, dry patches or blisters
Wear proper footwear and socks: good soled shoes with quality light coloured socks
Maintain a healthy active lifestyle
Consider arch support or a custom foot orthotic to improve pressure distribution throughout the feet
